DESIGN PROBLEMS TO AVOID WHEN HIRING LOS ANGELES OR VENTURA INTERIOR DESIGNERS

Hi. My name is Jo-Ann Capelaci. I’m the owner and principal designer for Colours and Concepts. We’re one of the more experienced Ventura Interior Designers serving both Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

One question many people ask is…

What are some problems to avoid when hiring and working with professional Los Angeles or Ventura Interior Designers?

Well first, hiring a qualified professional Interior Designer should minimize the stress associated with

- selection of materials and colors,
- poor workmanship,
- errors in specifications, and
- unreliability of contractors.

It can also greatly reduce the time needed for many design projects. Obviously the longer a project takes, the longer you will be inconvenienced by a mess and perhaps an unlivable home.

Sometimes it’s necessary for you to temporarily relocate while the work is being done.

Experienced Los Angeles and Ventura Interior Designers with project management skills can usually coordinate contractors and suppliers to minimize any disruptions and create a more seamless design process.

Of course, you want to make sure you are selecting someone with the right mix of design skills, time management and project management expertise, and someone with effective listening skills.

Several times I have been told that a client was not happy with a designer they hired previously. Often the client will explain that, the designer told me I need to do this, this and this and I didn’t want to do this, this and this. In these cases the client would explain that the designer presented a design that was not what they wanted to do and had a color palate they were not happy with.

To me, I’m not sure this is doing your job properly, if you’re a designer.

As one of the more experienced Los Angeles and Ventura Interior Designers, I’ve learned that it’s important to listen effectively to the client and not inject too much of my own ego into the design suggestions.

So therefore, first of all, when you hire an Interior Designer, make sure they ask you a lot of questions, and are someone who can understand what you are trying to articulate to them.

You can often tell this in the first interview.

Some clients will go further and hire Los Angeles or Ventura Interior Designers for a few hours at the concept stage, to get a sense for how the Designer works and interacts with them.

If the Designer does not have a broad background, where they have worked on many types of projects over their career, that may also be a problem. They may simply be a “one note” designer, providing a limited palate of ideas and resources.

Also, if the designer has poor time management skills, this can be a real red flag. From their returning calls to you in a timely manner to their delivering the initial plans, you can often get a sense of their professionalism and dependability.

Remember, your Interior Design project is not just about getting a few great ideas on paper. It’s also about your Designer’s ability to coordinate the various contractors and suppliers who may also be involved in creating an amazing living space for you. That’s why it’s so important to only work with Los Angeles and Ventura Interior Designers who have relationships with numerous types of contractors and suppliers.
Los Angeles and Ventura Interior Designers with poor time management can cost you time, but can also impact the ultimate budget of your project. Without effective Design Management, the potential for problems can skyrocket.

Of course, with every Design project, there is a possibility for unforeseen problems, as well as last minute changes and ideas, especially on the part of the Client. A professional designer should be flexible enough to accommodate not just the initial wishes of the client, but also, changes that may come up because of a last minute inspiration or a potential problem situation that arises during construction.

For this reason, a good designer should be solution driven and flexible.

With all the possible variables, it is especially important that your Designer have considerable experience with many of the suppliers and contractors that will be used.

Of course, problems will periodically arise with even the best suppliers. But working with an experienced professional Designer will generally reduce the likelihood of unreliable suppliers.

Needless to say, an effective Professional Designer should listen carefully to the Client’s needs and requests. But they should also be able to make suggestions beyond the client’s initial ideas.

You are hiring a professional who, in many cases, will have a vast experience and knowledge base that you can tap, including ideas you may not have considered that could really help.

If your Designer doesn’t present fresh ideas, then you may be getting short-changed in the possibilities for great design of your home.

Certainly, the biggest problems arise when a Designer does not guide the client through the decision process based on the client’s specific lifestyle, budget and preferences.

Truly effective Los Angeles and Ventura Interior Designers will take the time to understand your lifestyle, budget and preferences so they can Design a living environment that meets or exceeds your goals and wishes…a design that reflects your personality.

In their training, student interior designers often learn about the history of their profession. This can be a really important way to give context to their subsequent careers. In this article, I will draw on my experience as an interior designer and educator to discuss the history of this exciting field.

The earliest professional interior designers were based in London – the British had become intrigued by Egyptian techniques of decorating household objects and wanted the same for themselves. London families became desperate to employ an interior designer to create magical spaces and accessorise their interiors. As interior designers came to be recognised as professionals, they increasingly found a need to draw on history to create fabulous results. This was particularly true when creating designs for historic London mansions or listed buildings – they saw historical reflections as a way of preserving the past while also looking to the future.

THE ANCIENT ROMANS

In Ancient Rome, citizens demanded comfort, luxury and wealth. These elements are still important in the work of interior designers across the world today. The lavish decorations, tapestries and iconic stonework today remain as timeless and popular in London as in Tokyo or Sydney. The Ancient Romans adored bespoke furniture and loved quality textiles and expensive fabrics.

MONASTIC TIMES

After the collapse of Roman rule, the church assumed power and largely discouraged the most creative interior designers. Opulent interiors were taken out and interior designers were instructed to install quiet and simple oak panels with dark lines and sharp edges. This influence was felt throughout Europe – from London all the way to Florence.

RENAISSANCE AND REVIVAL

The Renaissance saw the emergence of professional French or French-inspired interior designers. It was a new age of elegance and sophistication, which saw the rebuilding of the London Interior Designer community and a fresh take on creative and beautiful living spaces. A “palatial” feel was rediscovered, and interior designers began to take advantage of new transport axes going through London to the continent and to the Americas in order to rediscover their profession and herald the next generation of design.

This brings to an end my article on how the work of interior designers has changed over the ages. In my next article, I’ll reflect on how interior designers use interior fashions for great effect.

When interior designers use the term “wall hangings,” they are commonly referring to anything and everything that one may hang on a wall. This can include pictures, photographs, plates, frames, mirrors, sculptures, reliefs and much more besides. London is a fabulous place to choose wall hangings due to the many active artist communities and the strong tradition of professional interior design.

One of the most important elements of wall hangings are pictures. Many interior designers know that pictures are the way to “make a house a home.” However, poor positioning of pictures can easily detract from an otherwise well-planned interior design. This is especially important in smaller London homes or flats. Your interior designer will be able to outline the key points that need to be kept in mind regardless of whether you are hanging a recent family photo or an ancient heirloom. In London, interior designers have a saying, namely that “all pictures should relate to something else in the room.” This means that wall hangings of this type should never look as though they were included by accident. Pictures should be related via either colour or thematic elements to display tables, armchairs, bookshelves or fireplaces – or indeed to architectural features, such as panelling or mouldings, which can often be quite historic and interesting in London residences.

London interior designers will often elect not to position wall hangings symmetrically (meaning centred on fireplaces or furniture), since this can make the overall interior design seem a little uninspired or “flat.”

In London, it is important to remember that the weather is often a little rainy and cool. Therefore interior designers often find it desirable to depict slightly brighter images in their selection of wall hangings. It is also important to group pictures that are related to one another. An interior designer will often place a selection of landscapes close to one another, or they will do the same for seascapes or floral pictures. Another approach often used by some of the most prestigious London interior design consultancies is to group images by colour themes or at the very least by styles of frame or mounting.

In the next article in this interior design series, I will discuss in more detail the practicalities of how to install pictures.

When interior designers use the term “wall hangings,” they are commonly referring to anything and everything that one may hang on a wall. London is a fabulous place to choose wall hangings due to the many active artist communities and the strong tradition of professional interior design. In this second article in my series on “How Interior Designers Select Wall Hangings,” I will talk in detail about several approaches that I have seen while working alongside many of London’s most successful interior design professionals.

As a general guideline, pictures tend to work well when arranged in squares or rectangles. London is a world fashion centre, and jaunty mismatched shapes can be interesting for certain highly customised interior designs, but in most cases it is best to stick with simple 90-degree angles.

Second, symmetry is important. Often when the interior designer has one central picture and several others in a set, they will choose some sort of symmetrical arrangement.

Third, a popular approach in London’s interior design community is to use the concept of “horizons” against which to align the upper edges of multiple pictures in a group. If an interior designer has an assortment of differently-sized rectangular frames, they may choose to hang an upper row from one “horizon” and the lower row from a different “horizon.”

Fourth, London interior design consultancies often talk of “anchoring.” This refers to a technique by which the largest images in a set form the corners of an imaginary rectangle or square, while smaller pictures are used to “fill in” the rest of the available area.

Fifth, to add interest and move away from rectangles, certain interior design professionals love to use the “cross technique” when they have rectangular frames of various sizes. This requires arranging pictures in the shape of a cross, with the larger pictures below the horizontal line and smaller frames above to balance their mass.

Sixth, London interior designers often focus on hanging the largest pictures at the bottom of a group, along a single horizontal line. This can give a stable feel to the broader arrangement. I have worked with some top London interior design teams who always choose to place the tallest image in the centre of this horizon to draw the eye upwards and accentuate features of the presentation.

In the next articles in this series, I will talk about best practices in the use of lighting and mirrors to highlight wall hangings of various types.

The Psychology Of The Interior With London Builders

Architecture is sometimes poetically called stiff music. Very often even a little detail can cause melancholy or vice-versa, bring the feeling of cheerfulness, burst of

You may often hear noises such as creaking being emitted throughout the house if you are living in a home that is made from wood. Thanks to the brittleness, wood gives off noise at low level frequencies and it is common whether there is movement or not. Soundproofing can be an issue in these homes. Although, it also is very common in detached houses as well but commonly it seems to be an issue in homes that are co-joined such as duplexes.
When interior designers use the term “wall hangings,” they are commonly referring to anything and everything that one may hang on a wall. London is a fabulous place to choose wall hangings due to the many active artist communities and the strong tradition of professional interior design. In this third and final article in my series on “How Interior Designers Select Wall Hangings,” I will discuss some approaches to lighting and mirror installations that I have seen while working alongside many of London’s most successful interior design professionals.

Lighting is an incredibly important part of the art of interior design when it comes to wall hangings. Sometimes it can be absolutely stunning to include a spotlight effect or underlighting to draw the eye towards a particularly fabulous photograph or painted centrepiece. In London, interior designers will normally include lighting elements at the very first stage of their brief. As with so many parts of interior design, nothing is ever an afterthought – the entire design is comprehensive and perfectly envisioned right from the start. For example, professional interior designers will anticipate a need for any wall-hung picture lights and will make sure this is included in the electrical drawings for the electrical contractors to fit a socket at the appropriate height during the early preparation phase of your project. (In most London residences, such sockets heights are non-standard.)

Mirrors can be appropriate for an interior design because they make a room appear larger and can help the resident to better visualise artwork or other wall hangings from many perspectives. This is particularly important for certain smaller London residences which may feature awkward spaces or difficult corners. The professional interior designer will make sure to think hard about appropriate placement of mirrors – whether they are being included for practical or decorative purposes. If a mirror is framed, the interior designer will make sure that the frame is matched or coordinated with other frames or materials in the room.

When using a mirror decoratively, the professional interior designer will always pay attention to make sure that it reflects something of interest. I have seen less experienced interior designers in London occasionally hang a mirror in a place where the reflections can cause annoyance or distraction to someone sitting at a table or on a settee. Fortunately mirrors can be easily re-hung elsewhere, but the most prestigious London interior design consultancies will always take this into account and get it right the first time.

Rick Abbott is synonymous for designing and supplying fitted kitchens around Hull and East Yorkshire for over 25 years. Rick Abbott design was originally created for supplying and fitting kitchens on luxurious super yachts, our website has some information and pictures taken from My Nero to show you an example of the high quality craftsmanship that went into installing the fitted kitchen.

Rick Abbott Fitted Kitchens Hull is based in the Daniels showroom within the Landau building, the fitted kitchen showroom contains some great ideas to look at when you are designing your next kitchen. Use Rick’s extensive experience of kitchen design to create a layout and design perfect for you and your home, or yacht with interesting ideas and ingenious space saving ideas. Once you have an idea of the contents and layout of your fitted kitchen our talented CAD designer Lucy Cumings will provide you with an unbelievable realistic computer generated fitted kitchen so you can see exactly what the completed fitted kitchen will look like. For an example of who close Lucy can get the images visit www. rickabbottdesigns.co.uk and look at the gallery of computer images and finished fitted kitchens.

Here are some ideas of what to look for in your next fitted kitchen, as we have mentioned Rick Abbott has over 25 years experience of delivering high quality fitted kitchens in Hull and here are some of the mistakes people make when buying a new fitted kitchen.

Fitted Kitchen Mistake 1 – Matching carcasses and doors
The colour and quality of your carcass is very important when choosing your fitted kitchen, some people think that the carcass is hidden and therefore not important however, there is nothing worse in a new kitchen than looking at the door gap and seeing a white carcass through those beech coloured doors.

Fitted Kitchen Mistake 2 – Poor quality carcasses and doors
Look at the back of the base carcass and doors to ensure they are colour coordinated, a beech effect front and white interior is a tell tale sign of a low quality product and craftsmanship.

Fitted Kitchen Mistake 3 – Anti slam v’s soft close
These are not the same, anti slam close themselves when they reach the last couple of centimetres

Fitted Kitchen Advice 1 – Buy a sample door
You are about to invest a large sum of money in a new kitted kitchen why not request or buy a sample door, from this you will have a better idea of the fitted kitchens quality prior to purchase.

Fitted Kitchen Advice 2 – Integrated or free standing appliances
The look of a finished fitted kitchen using integrated appliances is vastly improved, as kitchen fitters in Hull we often get comments about the mistake of not adding integrated appliances.

Fitted Kitchen Advice 3 – Hidden extras
Ensure you understand the full cost of your new fitted kitchen some fitted kitchen suppliers will charge an additional cost for items like hinges, draw runners and handles. Make sure you know what you are buying.

The career of an interior designer combines creativity with business expertise and people skills. The traits of successful designers are varied and include:
·Attentive to colors, textures, materials, lighting and layouts in various settings.
·Enjoy designing or remodeling their own and other’s environments.
·Are creative and artistic.
·Have the ability to sell.
·Can organize details.
·Communicate and work well with clients and other design professionals.
·Create spaces that are functional, visually appealing, safe and meet all the desired requirements.
·Can clearly identify the purpose and functions of various spaces.
·Understand the client’s vision for esthetic qualities, the look and feel, of projects.
·Do research and keep current on latest trends, materials and products.
·Are problem solvers.
·Have ability to analyze designs and plan spaces.
·Possess expertise in interior construction, materials, furniture, equipment and local building codes to help coordinate projects.
·Can read architectural blueprints and create their own drawings.
·Fit together artistic, functional and technical requirements.

Some specific tasks designers become involved with are choosing, negotiating with, scheduling and overseeing installers, invoicing clients, paying for necessary materials and furnishings and making sure codes are met. If you are thinking that being a designer involves more business than artistry, you are right.

The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), formerly known as FIDER, oversees programs at colleges and universities and certifies that certain principles and practices are taught. A bachelor’s degree from a CIDA school is highly recommended and is the minimum for doing commercial work. Masters and doctorate degrees are offered at many universities. Some of the classes you can expect to take are computer aided drafting, business/marketing, art, drawing, and art, furniture and antique history. You can also expect to spend many hours on design projects.

It is imperative that designers understand not only aesthetics, but also the safety aspects of interiors. Because of this, interior designers are now licensed professionals, much like architects and nurses. The National Council for Interior Design Qualification offers an examination to certify interior designers who have met the minimum standards for professional practice. This exam is the standard to measure the competency of designers.
Before you can take the NCIDQ exam and earn your license to practice, you must have at least six years of working experience, two years of schooling plus four years of work experience or four years in a CIDA college or university plus two years of work experience. You cannot advertise or represent yourself as a registered interior designer unless you meet the minimum education, experience and examination requirements established in your state/province, and apply for use of the state-regulated title with the proper state board.
There are many career paths to take within the realm of interior design. There are residential and commercial design jobs. Within commercial business, you could specialize in schools, hospitals, banks, malls, hotels or restaurants. In larger commercial projects, your job could be project manager, draftsperson or specifier of products. Some professionals go on to be sales representatives for interior products, business owners of design firms, drapery manufacturers or even specialized installers. There are many possibilities for advancement. As our economy grows, so will the need for qualified designers. As people become busier with their personal and professional lives, they have less time to think about decorating and creating environments that reflect themselves. As long as there are homes and businesses, there will be a need for interior designers.

Begin by posing as magazines on interior design and the cutting of two examples of things that you like and you do not like. You can also use the ideas of home visits show and watch programs from design to television.
